Scott's Farm
Scott's Farm in Ruwa, approximately 30km outside of the capital. A rural area that was once a white owned dairy farm.
Monday 14th March 2010.
Today we go to Ruwa and a former white owned farm now run by a War Veteran now home to families from the urban slums.
I am going with a Dutch charity founded by XX and now run by his daughter Gayle De Suza. Gayle has brought along one of the main donors to her charity, Ben, so that he can see for himself the work they are all trying to do here.
The Catholic church has a mission near and it is father joza's job to administer the food aid they bring. Recently they had a 7 tonne lorry stolen full of food. That month the food distribution could not go ahead and people had to go without.
Each family has a plot of land a hut and grows whatever they can on that land to help feed themselves throughout the year. The church supliment that harvest because there are very few ways for the tennants to earn extra money.
We are 30km outside Harare the views are sprawling and flat. The odd rocky outcrop or gentle valley are the only things between you and a horizon many miles away. This farm used to be a dairy producing farm but now the majority of its tennants are little more than subsistance farmers that cannot grow enough to survive.
Albert was 80 years old, that is what it said on his identity card. He was proud of that and his little plot of land. Rightly so as he had a good field or two of maise, pumpkins trailing all over and sweet potatoes. His hut was smart and clean. Tin plates and mugs all from a time before zimbabwe's decline.
Gayles donations were going to go towards the education of some of the children in the area. We met a family of 5 missing a generation. The parents had died of HIV and the 3 children were left to be raised by their grandparents. Unable to feed and educate these boys the church and the Schurrman-de-Suza foundation are making a difference to a few lives in this area.
